Parents for Public Schools (PPS) is committed to building leadership in parents to elevate their role in education reform. With training and resources, PPS parents are equipped to become effective decision makers and advocates for all children.
PPS parents are equipped with leadership skills to engage in school improvement efforts at the local, state, and national level. PPS parents learn school district policy and state educational standards. They stay informed on school board meetings and elections. PPS creates an expanded parent involvement that goes beyond helping with homework to influence how schools and school districts are governed.
Many PPS chapters offer intensive leadership training. One chapter offers a three-month course to equip parents with a strong knowledge of state and federal educational standards and accountability measures. This training produces parents who can serve as leaders. PPS parents have gone on to help write school district budgets, be elected to the state Legislature, direct after-school programs to raise math scores, expand AP course offerings in local high schools, and lead the effort to pass school bond elections.
PPS chapters teach parents how school districts and school boards work, including conducting public forums for candidates running for election to school board. PPS parents push for open school board meetings that encourage public input.
