The first Parent Leadership Institute conducted in the Mississippi Delta graduated its first class in May 2009. The projects currently underway resulting from the first Delta Parent Leadership Institute are:

  • Early Morning Reading: Clarksdale Municipal School District
    Goal: To increase the number of third grade students reading at the proficient level.

Angela Jones and Annette Sykes working at George H. Oliver Elementary

  • Math is a Blast: Clarksdale Municipal School District
    Goal: To increase the number of students at proficiency level in math.

Janise Ray-Thomas working at George H. Oliver Elementary

  • Math First: Leland Municipal School District
    Goal: To increase in math scores on MCT2 by 2014.

Rodney Lakes working at Leland Middle School (Leland Municipal School District)

  • IMPACT (Involving Many Parents; Achieving Community Teamwork): Mound Bayou School District
    Goal: To increase language arts scores 5% each year to reach the goal of 50% proficient and above by 2014

    Bobbie Jean Dulaney, Elaine Baker, and Francye Towers are working at John F. Kennedy High School

  • Reading Best: Quitman County School District
    Goal: To increase scores on MCT2 by 3rd graders and move all scores to proficient or advanced.

Lakesha Jarriett is working at Quitman County Elementary School

  • Stay in Line: Quitman County School District
    Goal: To reduce drop-out rate and increase graduation rate each year, starting in 2010.

Sharon Upshaw is working at Madison Palmer High School

  • Reading Magic: Shaw School District
    Goal: To increase 4th graders reading at proficient level.

Charlie W. Jackson, Jr., Cora S. Jackson, and Katherine Thompson are working in McEvans Elementary School

  • Footprints to Success: Shaw School District
    Goal: To increase in scores on the English II SAT.

    Kathy K. Moore, Carmencita Davis and Valerie L. Smith-Silas are working at Shaw High School

  • Rocking Into Reading: South Delta School District
    Goal: To increase the number of 3rd graders scoring proficient or above in reading.

Carl Watley, Fannie Marshall White, and Linda Watts are working at South Delta Elementary

  • I Have Character: Sunflower County School District
    Goal: Reduce discipline referrals among middle school students by 50% by 2011.

    Brenda Gwin and Sonja Nash are working at Ruleville Middle School
